Sourdough Starter

from $18.00

Over 100 year old started soured originally from within Alaska. A sourdough starter is a mixture of flour and water culture that has beneficial bacteria and wild yeasts. This mixture is continually maintained with regular ingredients (or feedings) and is used to leaven and flavor new bread dough.

Included is dehydrated Sourdough Starter Culture and instructions for reviving your culture is located on the back. Can also be found within our blog area or link below.

Ingredients: Organic Unbleached White Flour, Water

What is the appropriate time to awaken your starter to begin using? Give the culture a few days 3-5 days, prior to using in your first recipe, to awake and breathe in some good bacteria. In a small glass bowl or jar, mix 15 grams of the dehydrated sourdough starter with 30-45 grams of 80 degree well or distilled water. Cover with breathable muslin, cheesecloth, or tea towel. It needs to breathe but keep bugs out. Stir lightly a couple times and allow the starter and water to sit for about two hours, or until the dried starter dissolves. Then continue to let it rest and rise for the next 3-5 days. Make sure to check in on it every morning and evening to ensure no overflow is happening. The taller skinnier shaped glass container will cause a faster rise later on.

For best continued feeding schedule and ingredient amounts follow our blog for future sourdough articles.
